Come along with my family as we dive into a full day of winter adventure at the Batawa Ski Hill and its surrounding attractions in Quinte West. Trust me, this little gem in southeastern Ontario has something for everyone! Going back home to visit family means an excellent opportunity to spend time outdoors.
Discover Batawa Ski Hill
The Batawa Ski Hill, affectionately known as the “small hill with a big heart,” is a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike. Located in Quinte West, Ontario, just north of Highway 401, this ski hill has a rich history dating back to 1959, when it was established by employees of the Bata Shoe Company. It’s the only ski hill in quite a large radius, making it a hub for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts who travel from far and wide to enjoy its slopes.
If you’re looking for it, it’s close to Lock 4 on the Trent-Severn Waterway.
For my family, this outing was a mix of firsts and traditions. My 15-year-old nephew, T-Dog, an experienced skier, practically grew up on these slopes as they are in the backyard of his former elementary school. Meanwhile, my 10-year-old son, Z Man, who is sadly an urban city kid, just received a snowboard for Christmas and was ready to learn and take on the beginner runs.
For me? I’m not a downhill skier or snowboarder. Cross-country skiing? Yes, but that is not an option here. For our time at the Batawa Ski Hill, I am all about the après-ski vibes—hot chocolate in hand, soaking in the lively atmosphere by the fire pit.

Getting Started: Batawa Ski Hill Rentals and Lessons
The process of buying the lift ticket for my nephew online was straightforward. You can buy directly through the Batawa Ski Hill website here. The lift tickets are purchased in blocks of 4 hours. It was a literal “add to cart” and check out on the website. We decided to come on a Wednesday when the ski hill opened to make the most of our time. Since my son had never been on a snowboard, let alone know what kind of boots are needed, I purchased the beginner’s package for him on the website that included a helmet rental, boots, an hour-long lesson and use of a snowboard if he wanted (we brought his along).
Compared to other places around Ontario we have been, I find this location to be super affordable.
The beginner slopes are Bambi and Boomerang, which are perfect for teaching and learning how to ski downhill and snowboard. My son’s instructor, Kathryn (spelled just like me!), was amazing. She made him feel comfortable right away, teaching him how to strap in with one foot and maneuver the board. Before long, they were heading up the lift for his first run down Bambi. By the end of their hour-long lesson, he was hooked!
Exploring the Amenities at Batawa Ski Hill
While my son mastered slowing down and turning with his snowboard on Bambi and my nephew came flying down Smokey and Meadow repeatedly, I got some hot chocolate and took in the fresh air from the seating area by the fire pit. I could see everywhere from where I was. It was awesome having the fire as a heat source and being there for the boys if they needed me. The warmth of the fire and the vibrant energy of the ski hill made for a perfect winter moment.Or if they wanted poutine, which did happen and is excellent at the Batawa Grill by the way.
If I wanted to move inside, there is a main level sitting area as well as an upstairs with a bird’s eye view of the slopes and patio. The washrooms are beyond adequate and have warm water to get the blood flowing in the hands again. There is enough room in there if you want to change your clothing, but not for a group to do so.
For those who prefer other outdoor adventures, Batawa has you covered. The area boasts several hiking trails, including the Batawa Hiking Trails, which are perfect for snowshoeing in the winter. There’s even a Dino Dig site that’s a year-round hit with younger visitors—a fun and interactive way to keep little ones entertained.
Dinner at Shoeless Joe’s Trenton
Once the boys were tired out, we headed down to Shoeless Joes at Homestead Marketplace. Homestead Marketplace is a newer attraction in the Bay of Quinte Region, opened just last year! In the summer, they have fun places to take the kids – there’s an aerial course and mini putt as well as a shopping and market area. My son and I checked it out last year and it was a great spot to hang out for the afternoon.
Shoeless Joes will have an amazing patio in the warmer weather and the franchise there is locally owned. We had a great dinner of calamari, a steak taco bowl and a Philly cheesesteak sandwich. And dessert! We cannot forget the dessert – we had the ultimate cookie, a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie with ice cream and chocolate and caramel sauce. So good! It was well shared and enjoyed. Price point-wise, it’s not an inexpensive family meal, but to support the local economy, I’m all in.
Evening Skating at the Batawa Community Centre
For an evening activity that the whole family can partake in – there are skating rinks at the Batawa Community Centre.
There are designated areas for leisurely skates. If playing hockey is more your speed, there are assigned ice areas for you to play. I’ve been taking my kids to this skating area year after year when we visit my mom. Both my son and daughter spent their early days on ice skates here and it’s such a fun way to be under the stars and get some fresh air!
Whether you’re teaching a young one or just enjoying a leisurely skate, these rinks are the perfect place to make memories.
The Bleasdell Boulder: A Natural Wonder
If you have some extra time, don’t miss the Bleasdell Boulder—a nearby geological marvel. This massive glacial erratic is one of the largest in North America and a must-see for nature enthusiasts. The surrounding trails are well-maintained and accessible year-round, offering a peaceful retreat in any season.
Each season offers a unique perspective on its beauty—in the fall, it’s surrounded by vibrant leaves, and in winter, the snow creates a peaceful, serene backdrop. The trails around the boulder are well-maintained, making it an easy and enjoyable walk for all ages. It’s a wonderful spot to reflect and connect with nature.
Bonus Activity: Golden Hawks Hockey
While we didn’t catch a game this time, the Trenton Golden Hawks—our local Ontario Junior Hockey League team—are always a great option for family entertainment. Their games at Duncan Memorial Gardens in downtown Trenton are filled with energy and excitement, making them a fun outing for fans of all ages. They are doing really well in the eastern conference of the league, so there is a lot of energy in the stands!
